Isaiah 54

  • Vv. 1-3 Israel sees themselves as a barren woman. God approaches them as he once approached Abraham and Sarah, proclaiming that they surely will be more fruitful than those who have a head start. Because the Lord has declared this, Israel is to begin preparations for the children that are to come by enlarging the tent. The Lord is faithful and is bringing fruitfulness to the Israelites. V. 3 seems to point to the original covenant to the fathers of the faith.

  • Vv. 4-10 God calls for his people to find comfort in him. He smooths their trust issues for his leaving them by reminding them that His character is beyond doubt and they find solid ground in the understanding that they have a married-like relationship with God.

  • Vv. 11-17 Not only will Israel be restored, but it will be dressed in the finest of jewels. Not only will the Lord strengthen Israel, but the Lord will protect them that no evil shall succeed against them.

How does the church fit into this whole “barren woman” situation?

What is the significance to the names of God provided?

Because we are encouraged to expect great things from God, how does that change our response?
